building roads that connect us

how we do it

RECLAIMING

When our work at a gravel pit is finished, we give the land back better than we found it. This means replacing topsoil, planting vegetation, and making sure the area is safe and stable. These sites can be returned to farmland and wildlife habitat or become open spaces for the community to enjoy. Taking care of the land in this way is an important part of how we build roads responsibly.

PRESERVING & PROTECTING

Riverside’s environmental responsibility goes beyond regulatory compliance—we are committed to environmental leadership across all aspects of our operations. We actively enhance our site practices by fostering strong, collaborative relationships with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and local communities. Project planning intentionally minimizes disruption to wildlife and natural habitats by aligning activities with seasonal and ecological patterns. We prioritize the protection of water resources, erosion control, and contamination prevention to reduce environmental impacts. Through these efforts, Riverside strives to be not only a responsible neighbor and trusted partner, but also a recognized leader in environmental stewardship within our industry.

Crushing

Riverside has rock crushing and screening plants that produce a wide variety of job-specific materials like crushed aggregates, chips, and sand. Our plants are portable and easily deployed to produce materials on-site and in remote locations, reducing transportation and material handling costs.

Mixing

With five portable asphalt plants, Riverside has the capacity to pave multiple projects at one time. Asphalt is made by mixing aggregates with a petroleum-based binder. Oftentimes, our asphalt mix also incorporates reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP, which is old, worn-out roadway that is milled up and crushed into a reusable product. Mix designs containing RAP help us minimize waste and conserve natural resources.

Paving

Asphalt paving is the original operation of Riverside. We continue to ‘Pave The Way’ across Montana and Wyoming. Once the earthwork, grading, and stable sub-base are complete, hot asphalt is transported by truck from the plant to the roadway where it is meticulously laid by a paving machine. Behind the paver, three double-drum rollers follow in a synchronized pattern to vibrate and compact the asphalt into a smooth, uniform, and long-lasting roadway.

Sealing

We can extend the life of an existing roadway by sealing the surface using a slurry or chip seal method. To chip seal, a layer of asphalt emulsion is applied to the existing pavement and covered with a layer of finely crushed rocks called chips. The chips are rolled to embed them into the asphalt, creating a protective and skid-resistant surface that fills small cracks, improves traction, and delays the need for more costly repairs like resurfacing or full reconstruction.

Grading

Earth-moving, excavation, sub-grade preparation, drainage installation, embankment construction, and soil stabilization are essential processes in building durable roads capable of withstanding traffic loads, weather extremes, and long-term stresses. Completing these tasks effectively requires a versatile fleet of robust, specialized equipment.
